Entrance Into the Profession

1976 marked the U.S. Bicentennial, Gerald Ford's final days as President, and the incorporation of a small but innovative computer company named Apple Computer, Inc. It was also the year Bruce Moss accepted an offer to join the faculty at York Community High School as Assistant Director of Bands alongside Director of Bands, Richard Blatti. His teaching assignments included the Cadet (9th grade) Band, Guitar, Music Appreciation, and assisting with the YHS Marching Band. Two years later, Moss succeeded Blatti as Director of Bands. He became Chair of the Music Department in 1982, fulfilling dual roles for five years as both Director of Bands and Department Chair.

The Concert Band

Aside from the administrative duties for the music department, Moss's work as conductor of The York Concert Band brought the greatest challenge, and also the greatest rewards. The Concert Band was the highest performing of three wind bands at the school, and the majority of its members studied privately with specialists from the Chicago area. An array of impressive concerts and accomplishments for all of the bands laid the groundwork for a leave of absence from York in 1981 to begin doctoral studies with John Paynter at Northwestern University. Moss picked up where he left off upon his return to York in 1982.

The list of the The YHS Concert Band's accomplishments is long. There was a storied 2nd place finish at the 10th Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival. And, as you might expect, ratings of "Superior" at a variety of contests and festivals, both at the state level, and in festivals held in the Chicago suburbs where the standard of excellence was very high.

Although he had a high-achieving band, Moss's enthusiasm for contest participation was lukewarm. John Hagstrom, now of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Moss's former York High School Band student pointed out, "Dr. Moss rejected the idea of taking the York High School Band to state contests because he wanted us to strive toward quality for its own sake and away from trying to 'win.'"

The aspirations toward excellence led to an invited performance at the 1981 Music Educators National Conference (MENC) convention—the first ever occasion where an orchestra and concert band from the same school were invited to perform—as well as three performances of Donald Erb's Prismatic Variations in 1986 where Moss and York music students joined players from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for concerts at Orchestra Hall. Moss co-conducted the piece with Leonard Slatkin.

Guest Conductors and Performers

Moss was able to build upon several traditions that developed under his predecessors Richard Blatti and Laverne (Verne) Reimer. During his years at York, some of these included:

The context of Moss’s time in the public schools is recognizable to those who have a background in the history of public education in the United States. It was during his term at York that Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, T.H. Bell, created the National Commission on Excellence in Education (1981) and tasked the committee with examining the quality of education in the United States. The work of the committee led to the now famous report entitled A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform (April, 1983) which has been studied for well over 30 years by education researchers as well as in-service and pre-service educators.

Dr. Moss served as an arts administrator at one of the Nation’s most distinguished public secondary schools through that time. York was one of only 96 high schools in the country (151 total schools) to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education (1983) the first year the Blue Ribbon program existed. Secretary Bell visited York High School in February of 1984 to present the administrators, faculty (Moss among them), and students with a plaque commemorating the school’s outstanding achievements.

The York Music Program’s standard of excellence was befitting of the school’s high standards. Because of the reputation of York’s exemplary music program, Moss was asked to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Instrumental Music in Elmhurst, Illinois - A Comprehensive Instrumental Music Program” at the Music Educators National Conference National Assembly in Minneapolis in 1981.
